Any drivers planning on making a visit to France should ensure that they take out a good travel insurance policy.

Motorists caught exceeding the speed limit by more than twenty five miles per hour could lose their license on the spot, with foreign drivers not getting them back until upon returning back to their home countries.

Motorists who make the trip across the Channel therefore require a really good travel insurance policy, as it may be needed to cover the cost of a long journey home.

Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, told carpages.co.uk: 'Many families will be visiting France during the October break and risk having their holidays ruined if they break the speed limit.

'We are concerned by the growing numbers of drivers who find themselves stranded with no one to help and by the lack of knowledge about the legislation and the potential of this happening. None of the people who contacted us were aware of the possible consequences of their actions.'

The RAC has reported a large number of calls from motorists facing repatriation bills of up to £3,000, which will not be covered except by the very best travel insurance policies.

French laws on speeding have become far more draconian in recent years, in an effort to reduce French accident levels to British ones.
