Along with suitcases, laptops and holiday insurance, ultraviolet (UV) lamps are becoming one of the must-haves for business travellers.

When USA Today ran an expose on hotels that only changed the sheets in their rooms once a week, it opened the eyes of many travellers.

Now, dirt-wary travellers are using handheld UV lamps to inspect the sheets for bodily fluids when they stay at a hotel, the Times reports.

'All linen is fresh when a guest arrives, and will be changed every third day unless the guest requests a daily linen change,' said a spokesman for Marriott Hotels.

'There is a card in each room that explains this programme.'

Nonetheless, this is not enough for some people, while others are doubtful that some hotels really change the linen as often as they claim to.

For this reason, health-conscious travellers would be well advised to invest in a UV lamp, as well as a decent holiday insurance policy, and to stay in accommodation with a good reputation from cleanliness.
