The Lake District has been declared the 'best day out' at the second annual Northwest England Tourism awards.

Viewers of ITV Granada Go North West voted the Lake District as their favourite getaway spot, preferring the lakes to places like Cheshire's Tatton Park and Lancashire's Forest of Bowland.

'These prestigious awards recognise and reward the leaders in this important industry, the people and businesses that are setting the standards for other to follow.

Tourism is one of the fastest growing and most competitive industries in the world, worth £7 billion a year to the Northwest alone,' said Felicity Goodey, chair of the Tourism Forum for England's northwest.

No doubt the area's natural beauty was a selling point but also the wealth of activities and adventure sports available is attracting fans.

In recent years the Lake District has become the destination for company days out and team building activities such as rock climbing, abseiling or canoeing.

Other adventure sport aficionados are beating a well-worn track to the lakes, having a go at parachuting, kayaking or mountain biking.

But as enthusiasm for adventure sports continues to rise, it is worth remembering to take out adequate travel insurance covering adventure sports claims, if you fancy trying them out somewhere further flung than the Lake District.
