A concerned mum had begged all holidaymakers to take care after her son was involved in a car crash while in Portugal.
While enjoying a holiday in the sun, Jake Bennett was unfortunately hit by a car, reports the Evening Star.
Even more unfortunate was that Mr Bennett did not take out travel insurance, leaving his family in a rather desperate situation to get him home.
They eventually raised £10,000 for an air ambulance home to the UK, where he is now recovering in hospital.
Ms Pickett has warned of the importance of taking out travel insurance when going abroad, especially in countries such as Portugal, where she says the driving can be quite erratic.
'Some of the driving is quite manic,' she said.
'All the police seem to care about is protecting their own.
'Portugal is very different to England, it's not a nanny state. When we went to speak to the police to find out what was going on, they didn't want to know.'
While most holidaymakers leave foreign lands with a smile on their face and a head full of memories, it is important to realise that sometime things do go wrong, and travel insurance will protect holidaymakers in these emergencies.
