Food is becoming an increasingly important part of the average UK tourist's holiday, says new research.

According to World Travel Market 53 per cent of Brits ranked eating traditional dishes as a 'very important' or 'important' part of their holiday.

Brits also revealed their eagerness to try new culinary delights when abroad, with 86 per cent enjoying local foods when away.

Of course, it is best to ensure that travellers are covered by full travel insurance before leaving the UK. Most people have suffered from a tummy upset abroad, which can sometimes be caused from food not suited to the UK diet and travel insurance will pay for any medical treatment that is required.

Indeed, Brits like food so much that 83 per cent said they were prepared to forgo the their pre-paid hotel meal to try local dishes in restaurants.

'The last five years has seen an incredible shift in the way holidays are marketed and it's all because people are demanding authentic experiences,' said Erik Wolf, president of the International Culinary Tourism Association.
