After the Iraq war, not many travellers would put Afghanistan on their destination wish list, but one tour company aims to change all that.

Matthew Leeming and Bijan Omrani have written a new tourist guide about the country, aiming to encourage visitors to see first hand what they describe as its 'breathtaking landscapes and cultural treasures'.

Of course, the Foreign Office advises against travel to this area, advice that is best heeded, but if adventurers have their heart set on seeing the country, they would be wise to take out specialist travel insurance.

'While logistics, the lodges and the chaikhanas (tea houses) are improving, the wildlife, the trekking and the people remain simply incredible,' Leeming writes.

'Though Afghanistan remains essentially untamed, it's becoming easier to get around. An octogenarian English couple and a group of retirement age trekkers from Hong Kong have just made separate voyages through the north,' he encouraged.

If attempting any trekking, travellers should check their travel insurance policy to make sure that they are covered, as some policies will not insure against 'dangerous' activities unless an additional premium is paid.
