Nearly one in four people who travels abroad for their stag or hen do gets into trouble abroad, finds a new report.

Whether it's from losing travel documents, or having money or belongings stolen, 24 per cent of revellers said their festivities turned into a nightmare, emphasising the value of travel insurance.

Around a quarter of people said that they had been arrested, one third became ill or injured, and half lost money, tickets or credit cards.

Travel insurance should finically cover the cost of any emergency expenditure such as medical bills and if someone is the victim of theft, insurance will usually replace belongings and currency.

Poor preparation also leaves Brits vulnerable to holiday horrors and 57 per cent of travellers rely on the party's organiser and fail to thoroughly research the destination.

Over half of travellers forget to take out travel insurance, but with one in four buying new clothes for the trip, it seems that some people underestimate the value of their belongings.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Steve Jewitt-Fleet said: 'Thousands of stag and hen parties are held abroad each year and most return having had a great time. However by their very nature, with guests out to 'let their hair down' they are at high risk of getting into problems.

'Many of these situations can be avoided if every individual in the group makes a few simple preparations before they travel,' he added.
