The latest in freak weather storms, hurricane Katrina, has ripped through parts of the US, killing an estimated 80 people and causing havoc to buildings, roads, trees.

On Tuesday, refuges fleeing the storm sought sanctuary in New Orleans' Superdome, and the powerful gale tore of the roof, exposing the people beneath it.

The events show the indiscriminate power of nature to destroy, and demonstrates the need for travel insurance wherever people go.

A good insurance policy would pay for policyholders to be evacuated by aeroplane if needed and would cover the cost of belongings lost in the storm.

Insurers have said that the storm could cost up to £14 billion, making it the most expensive case of bad weather in the country's history.

Flooding has proved a severe consequence of the storm, and gushing water has destroyed hundreds of homes.

Travellers are advised to always check weather warnings before setting off to hurricane-prone areas, and to insure they have adequate travel cover.
