Extreme weather conditions that have been sweeping Europe have caused devastation in the region.

Fires, floods and landslides have left locals reeling as they try and salvage their homes and belongings.

Unpredictable storms can occur abroad at any time, underlining the need for travel insurance.

It is reported that five people have been killed by floods in Switzerland and Austria and 14 people have their lives in Portugese fires.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates has said that the fires in Portugal 'have destroyed about 100 homes and more than 500 farm buildings' and he has called on the international community to help in extinguishing the blazes.
