Teenagers who go off travelling before university are running up huge phone bills when they call home, says a new report.
Backpackers taking a mobile overseas can prove reassuring for some anxious parents, but it can also lead to nasty bills on their return.
Calls from India on a mobile cost up to£1.50 per minute, if made through one of the big four mobile networks, and receiving a call can cost as much as £1.65 per minute.
Travel insurance is one easy step to prevent the shock of a big bill. Backpackers are exposes to all sorts of tropical diseases, and often place themselves in risky situations doing activities such as trekking, hiking and bungee jumping.
Backpacking cover will protect travellers in medical emergencies, and should also cover the costs of flying out relatives, or getting the injured person home if there is a serious occurrence.
The report from Onecompare advises travellers to buy a local SIM card if they want to reduce costs while away.
