Brits have spent an extra £200 million in the past two years trying to solve holiday problems abroad, says a new report.

The survey highlights the importance of travel insurance, which should help protect travellers from large emergency bills.

The problems stem from holidays not living up to expectations, and in extreme cases Brits are forced to shell out themselves to remove themselves from dreadful holiday situations.

Direct line reveals that nearly one in three holidaymakers have had their vacations ruined, and 12 per cent of this group has paid out extra money to either move hotels or eat at restaurants.

The top complaints were dirty hotel rooms, misleading brochure information, disappointing holiday representatives, and bad food and hotel location.

The report states that one in three holidaymakers don't complain about the problems with their holidays, yet travel insurance may include support to take out legal proceedings against the holiday provider, says Direct Line's Mr Price.
