Over 170,000 people lined the streets of Edinburgh yesterday for the opening parade of the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

Whilst this set an upbeat mood for the arts extravaganza, the sheer volume of people demonstrated the importance of travel insurance. In such large crowds, belongings can get lost or stolen and insurance will cover the cost of these items if they are lost or damaged.

The cavalcade, which saw bands, performers, dancers and motorbike riders joining the entire cast of the Military Tattoo to parade down Princes Street and but amidst the tumult, the theme of terrorism was hot on people's lips.

Terrorism is set to play a big part in this year's festival, making it one of the most political to date.

'This is the most politicised Fringe since the Seventies,' director Paul Gudgin is reported to have said.

Not only will there be increased security at the event, but at least ten of the major shows at the Fringe and the Edinburgh International Festival will be exploring the War on Terror theme.

People thinking of visiting the festival will be financially compensated by travel insurance in case of an attack. If people need to be expatriated by air, or if someone needs medical attention, the travel insurance should also cover these costs.

The festival will run until the end of August and will feature 16,000 performers from all over the world.
