One in ten parents consider travel insurance as no more important than cleaning the house, a new survey finds.

Parents are failing to properly prepare for breaks in the sun by not taking out adequate cover to protect loved-ones from accidents abroad.

Nearly one in three parents have experienced an accident or illness while abroad and 70 per cent of parents admit to worrying about accidents occurring, statistics that expose the need for travel insurance.

A further quarter of people questioned said that they had experienced theft or loss of property so the odds suggest that once in every four holidays, belongings will be lost or damaged, making travel insurance a necessity.

'Preparing for a family holiday can be one of the biggest stresses of the year. Yet, as a house-proud nation we are bizarrely more concerned about cleaning the house than organising adequate travel insurance!' said Hugh Stacey, head of travel services at the Post Office(R), who conducted the survey.
