Britons, in their eagerness to get away on holiday are forgetting to do a few simple things that could save them money in the long run.

Sorting out travel insurance should be a holidaymakers first move, as most policies will cover expenses such as cancellation compensation, which has been highlighted by the recent cessation of flights by EU Jet, leaving some travellers stranded.

When leaving home for a break, people should ensure they switch off the water supply and secure all entrances to the home. It could be worth investing in timer switches, or fitting a security light. A neighbour could also be asked to collect post and take in milk, to give the appearance that the home is occupied.

Once away, travel insurance will cover holidaymakers against most accidents and damage. However, to try and keep belongings safe in the first place, label all luggage clearly and leave copies of travel documents with friends and family.

Before undertaking any water sports, Britons should consult their travel insurance to make sure this covers them in event of an injury. For medical reasons also, it is best to check for vaccination requirements in advance.
