British travellers have proved that they prefer beach holidays above all other types of break.

According to a new survey, 38 per cent of Brits said they liked beach holidays the best, although travel insurance remains a priority whatever the holiday.

France was the most popular European destination, followed by Spain and the research found that the average cost of a holiday is £862.

City breaks, backpacking and cruises have all increased in popularity, though they can't match the allure of the beach, with just over one in ten people choosing a city break and two per cent opting for a cruise.

Over 72 per cent of those questioned leave the UK for overseas destinations, and the high number reflects the necessity of travel insurance to safeguard against accidents abroad.

Even on the beach, sunburn and dehydration can present serious medical problems and travel insurance will protect customers form huge medical bills.

John Franklin, spokesperson for Virgin Money Travel Insurance who commissioned the research, said: "We Brits certainly love heading for the sun, sea and sand during the summer. But, as well as the all important factor 25, holidaymakers should ensure they are fully covered with comprehensive travel insurance."
