The recent destruction wreaked by Hurricane Emily has highlighted the necessity of travel insurance.

Mexico's Caribbean cost was badly hit by the storm, as it swept through the holiday resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Emily left in her wake a trail of debris as she snapped trees and ruined power lines.

The island of Jamaica also suffered substantial damage in the hurricane, four people have been reported to have lost their lives, and up to 70,000 households lost power, with some homes being swept away altogether.

Thousands of tourists were evacuated before the hurricane hit, around 30,000 visitors were packed into better-fortified hotels or moved into schools or community halls that afforded better protection from the storm.

Insurance can be a small price to pay in the light of what some people have lost in Mother Nature's latest act.

Travellers in the UK have also suffered airport delays and cancellations, as planes will not fly out in the storm. Travel insurance will usually compensate policyholders for delay or cancellation, and can sometimes reimburse subsequent accommodation costs incurred.
