Holidaymakers could save up to £50 million using online travel services.

A new report claims that internet shoppers can take advantage of cheaper travel insurance and commission free money exchange.

An average of £678 is exchanged into foreign currency and travellers' cheques per trip, and for the UK's online holiday packagers the subsequent commission charges incurred could cost up to £50 million.

The research shows that 19 per cent of package holidays are now booked online, and that following a boom in the online industry, travel services are now second only to email as the most popular online activity.

The UK holds the largest share of Europe's £11.8 billion online travel market, with a total of 37 per cent, representing 600 per cent growth over the last five years.
