Althletes taking part in the VisitScotland Adventure Triathlon on July 23rd 2005 are to be insured for £1 million in the event of an attack from the Loch Ness monster.
Part of the three-event race involves swimming two laps of Urquhart Bay, the infamous "home" of the beast of the lake.
Insurance company NIG will cover the 100 triathlon competitors against any injury caused by Nessie in the 1500 metre swim through deep, dark water.
The insurer conceded that this was an "unusual risk", which many insurance companies would not consider. However, it would not rule out the possibility of a claim.
"These competitors will all be very psyched up and very driven so there's going to be a lot of noise and a lot of splashing going on - just the sort of thing that might annoy a prehistoric lake monster," said director David Hart.
"Or even worse, it might give it an appetite," he joked.
