Britons abroad often fall prey to hidden holiday costs, reveals new research from Morgan Stanley Consumer Banking.

Around 63 per cent of holidaymakers in Cyprus found excursions too expensive, while the same percentage of visitors to Malta found all-inclusive food "unsatisfactory" and were forced to eat out. Nearly half of those unlucky enough to lose personal effects were holidaying in Malta and 46 per cent of tourists were forced to buy emergency items while waiting for lost baggage.

The research also showed that one in two people visiting Turkey spent money on medical products, and a quarter of the people also needing medical supplies were visiting Spain.

Patrick Muir, marketing director, Morgan Stanley Consumer Banking, commented: "Holidays are already one of our most costly purchases, but these unexpected extras could really ruin a trip abroad.

"As well as thinking about how the purchase is made, we would advise holidaymakers to shop around for things like excursions and see if they can get deals or discounts on attractions," he advised.

With figures like these, it is important to ensure you have adequate holiday insurance for your trip.

While this won't guarantee cheap tickets to tourist sites, it will ensure that you can claim back any medical costs or lost baggage expenses.
