Between June and August, the understated Portuguese town of Sintra 28 km from Lisbon plays host to two annual music and ballet festivals.
Attracting big name orchestras, individual performers and ensembles from around the world, the Sintra Music Festival kicks off a summer of culture in this lush green paradise dotted with 8th and 9th century palaces and castles.
Although it can be overshadowed by the Portuguese capital, Sintra is popular with those holidaymakers in the know, and it provides a perfect destination for those looking to combine sightseeing, history and culture in a mountainous green setting close to the Atlantic Ocean.
Sinatra may be able to offer the visitor high culture but travel insurance is still key and holidaymakers should ensure they have secured comprehensive cover before departing for either of the two festivals.
The Sinatra Ballet festival, also known as Noites de Bailado, succeeds the music event and attracts some of the world's most acclaimed dance companies to perform at the numerous outdoor venues. A particular highlight is the performance in the grounds of one of Sintra's palaces, the Hotel Palacio de Seteais.
