Memphis Travel Information

Located in the southeast state of Tennessee in the United States, Memphis is considered the home of blues music. Elvis Presley's famous Graceland mansion is located here. In recent years the city has undergone much redevelopment, with many new shopping and entertainment areas transforming the city into a safe, enjoyable and exciting place to visit.

In and around town there is an abundance of museums focusing on arts, culture and music, including the impressive 'Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum', which has a great collection of guitars and fantastic audio and visual displays. The downtown area is also host to numerous bars and clubs with live bands playing old classics nightly.

Memphis Tourist Attractions

The midtown area of Memphis is home to the fantastic Memphis Zoo, which has panda bears and other exotic animals. You will also find many great displays of early American architecture with some perfectly restored homes in the Cooper-Young neighbourhood. The Pink Palace is an interesting mansion that has been turned into a museum, which now has an IMAX theatre and a planetarium, these are very popular excursions with tourists on holiday in Memphis.

Eating in Memphis is a real pleasure, with its array of tasty restaurants, cafés and local diners. Food is very inexpensive and there are many all you can eat BBQ restaurants for which the city is famous. The 'Half Shell' is a particularly good place to eat, offering an entire menu of fried food as well as many fresh seafood dishes.

Transport Around Memphis

Memphis is very accessible and its international airport services many American cities and a few destinations outside the US. Train services are available with Amtrak connecting to Chicago and New Orleans daily. Greyhound and Megabus have routes to many parts of the country. Self-driving is an enjoyable experience with the interstates 40 and 55 passing through the city.

The city of Memphis is generally quite safe, particularly in the tourist areas, although there are some panhandlers which can be a nuisance. They are generally harmless and easily avoided by ignoring them. With the new developments in town a high police presence is apparent, which offers peace of mind. But as with any large city small, unforeseen problems can arise and for this reason we advise you to take out travel insurance for you and your family before travelling.
