Toledo is the capital of Castile-La Mancha and has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, largely due to its vast collection of monuments. The town has seamlessly integrated historical cultural with modern facilities and architecture.

The historic district of Toledo has a maze of streets and charming houses. The main entrance into the town, the Bisagra Gateway, is guarded by two intimidating imperial coat of arms and makes for a fantastic photo opportunity.

Toledo Tourist Attractions

Toledo has so many tourist attractions and points of interest including the Plaza de Zocodover. This popular square is one of the liveliest areas in the town as both locals and visitors alike gather together for various social events. The city also has a wonderful selection of intricately designed churches, synagogues and grand mosques lining its narrow streets. One of the most noteworthy mosques is the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, dating back to 999 AD and designed in the Romanesque-Mudejar style.

Behind its massive walls, Toledo preserves a rich cultural legacy and artistry. To see an excellent example of this, you need only visit the 13th century Spanish Gothic Cathedral. The cathedral was built on top of a mosque and has 15 chapels, five naves and measures 120 metres long and 59 metres wide. The cathedral houses invaluable works of art including a bust of St John the Baptist.

Culture and history aficionados will be enchanted by the wide selection museums on offer in Toledo. The Casa de las Cadenas Museum houses an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture and drawings by renowned artists such as Benjamín Palencia and Aureliano de Beruete. Other popular museums include the Casa-Museo de El Greco, Santa Cruz Museum and the Toledo Museum of Contemporary Art.

You cannot visit Toledo without sampling the local cuisine. Wild game dishes are a staple in the region's gastronomy, as is fresh produce and fish. Marzipan cut in special shapes is a local delicacy and is definitely worth a try.
